['gɑːvɪ], Marcus Moziah, amerikanischer Politiker jamaikanischer Herkunft, * Saint Ann's Bay (Jamaika) 17. 8. 1887, ✝ London 10. 6. 1940; gründete 1914 die »Universal Negro Improvement Association« (UNIA), ging 1916 in die USA und begann in New York unter den Schwarzen eine wirksame »Zurück-nach-Afrika-Kampagne«. 1923 scheiterte der einzige wirkliche Siedlungsversuch am Widerstand der Regierung von Liberia. Garvey machte Bankrott, wurde wegen Betrugs zu fünf Jahren Gefängnis verurteilt und 1927 nach Jamaika abgeschoben. Seine Organisation zerfiel. Seit 1935 lebte Garvey in London.
